What is Film Streams
Established in 2005, Film Streams is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the cultural environment of the Omaha-Council Bluffs area through the presentation and discussion of film as an art form.

Is “Film Streams” one word or two?
Most definitely two separate words: Film Streams.

Where does the name Film Streams come from?
The name Film Streams refers to both our beloved city of Omaha (which means “above all others on a stream”) and the film LOVE STREAMS by John Cassavetes.

What is the Ruth Sokolof Theater?
Opened in late July 2007, the Ruth Sokolof Theater is the two-screen cinema that houses Film Streams' programming. The theater is named in recognition of an early and generous gift from the Sokolof Foundation to the Film Streams Capital Campaign. The name honors the memory of long-time Omaha teacher Ruth Sokolof. Find out more about the Ruth Sokolof Theater here.

What types of movies do you show?
Our programming includes first-run films – new independents, documentaries, and foreign films making their theatrical premiere in the area – and repertory selections representing the diverse history of cinema. In addition to screening films throughout the week, we also host a variety of special events, including lectures, forums, Q&A sessions with film professionals, partnerships with other community groups on film-based events, and special screenings for area filmmakers.

How many screens are there? How many seats?
Our cinema has two theaters, one seating 206, the other 96.

How often do you show films?
Seven-days-a-week. We show films starting in the late afternoon Monday-Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.

How much are tickets?
Tickets are $8 general admission, $6 for seniors, students and teachers, and $4 for Film Streams Members. To find out more, visit our Membership page.

How do I contact Film Streams?
Please see our Contact page for information on how to reach us.

What is Alexander Payne’s involvement?
An Omaha native, Alexander has been an incredible source of support for Film Streams from early on. In addition to serving on our Board of Directors, he also agreed to curate our initial repertory series, a month-long run of his ten favorite films (July 27-August 30, 2007).

Are you affiliated with Saddle Creek Records?
Yes, and no. As owners of the development that includes our cinema, Saddle Creek Records is, in a technical sense, our landlords. They’re also good friends, without whose support and leadership our downtown cinema project would not exist. In addition, Saddle Creek heads Jason Kulbel and Robb Nansel both serve on the Film Streams Advisory Board.

Do you have concessions?
Absolutely. In addition to traditional movie theater treats (including popcorn, candy, and soft drinks), our cinema proudly serves Blue Line Coffee, as well as some nontraditional (and healthier) theater treats.

How do you select films to show?
Generally speaking, we want to show films that are artistically interesting and/or socially relevant. For our first-run programming, we screen new independents, documentaries, and foreign films that meet that criteria and haven’t yet screened at other theaters in the Omaha-Council Bluffs region. Our repertory programming features films from throughout the history of cinema.

Do you show older movies?
Yes! Our repertory program features the best (and also some of the most overlooked) films produced during the century-long history of cinema, giving many people their first opportunities to experience various classic and contemporary films on the big screen.

What type of projection does your cinema have?
Our theaters are equipped with 35mm, DVD, and digital, High-Definition projection capabilities, as well as both platter and reel-to-reel systems.

Are you planning to host a festival?
We do not have plans to create our own film festival, but we are excited about working with existing events and encourage everyone to support the Omaha Film Festival.

Do you have plans to produce films?
No, our focus is on exhibiting films.

Do you sell tickets online?
Yes. You can purchase advance tickets either by visiting our Calendar section or clicking on the “Buy Tickets” link at the top of each page on our site.

Do you have a senior/student rate for tickets?
Yes. The ticket price for seniors and students is $6. We also offer a discount on senior and student memberships ($35), which brings the ticket cost down to $4.

How can I stay up-to-date on everything that’s happening with Film Streams?
Sign up for our e-newsletter. We’ll send you weekly news and updates about what's currently playing at the theater and what's ahead.

Do you have a membership program?
