Film Information
Based on the first three novels of the book series A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, this adaptation won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Makeup (the second to involve Carrey, after How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000) and received nominations for Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
After the three young Baudelaire siblings are left orphaned by a fire, they are carted off to live with their distant relative, Count Olaf (Jim Carrey). Unfortunately, Olaf is a cruel, scheming man only after the inheritance that the eldest Baudelaire, Violet (Emily Browning), is set to receive. The children seek shelter with their quirky Uncle Monty (Billy Connolly) and their Aunt Josephine (Meryl Streep), but Olaf is never far behind.
