We invite you to a special screening of Akeelah and the Bee alongside our collaborators, Girls Inc. Following this family-friendly film, there will be a discussion with their Executive Director and mentors and mentees from Girls Inc.

Akeelah, an 11-year-old girl living in South Los Angeles, discovers she has a talent for spelling, which she hopes will take her to the National Spelling Bee. Despite her mother's objections, Akeelah doesn't give up on her goal. She finds help in the form of a mysterious teacher, and along with overwhelming support from her community, Akeelah might just have what it takes to make her dream come true.

Halle Whitney, Girls Inc. Mentoring Coordinator

Halle Whitney is a non-profit professional passionate about gender and race equity. She is currently pursuing a degree in social services and hopes to make a long-lasting impact on the Omaha community

Candias Jones, Girls Inc. Executive Director

Candias "Candi" Jones is the Executive Director of Girls Inc., a leading organization dedicated to empowering young girls and supporting their growth into strong, smart, and bold individuals. With a rich background in advocating for equity and healing communities, Candi has devoted her career to supporting and advocating for children and families impacted by trauma, ensuring they receive the care and resources they need to thrive. In addition to her professional expertise, Candi is a passionate community advocate who is actively involved in initiatives aimed at promoting education, mental health, and social justice. Her dedication to creating inclusive and supportive environments for youth makes her a respected leader in her field. Her lived experiences and expertise will shed light on the importance of resilience, mentorship, and community support in helping young people achieve their dreams.

Toya Broadway, Girls Inc. Mentor

Toya Broadway is a licensed registered nurse who works for I Be Black Girl as a Birth Justice associate. Her experience ranges from former Peace Corps volunteer to Doula and Mentor. As the youngest of seven, she's embraced her favorite role as an aunt and mentor since age 10. She realizes the importance of mentorship and the benefit of setting a positive example for our future leaders.

Janii Blair, Girls Inc. Alumni

Janii Blair has been a member of Girls Inc. for eight years and recently graduated from Central High School. She is a Girls Inc. National scholarship recipient and a Susan T. Buffett Scholarship recipient. Janii graduated from the Eureka STEM program at Girls Inc. and plans on continuing her education at UNL as an engineering student. She enjoys art, music, science, and mathematics.
