A powerful convergence of existence and womanhood, April is the second feature of writer-director Dea Kulumbegashvili, whose film Beginning had its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2020. Shot by Arseni Khachaturan (Bones and All, Beginning), edited by Jacopo Ramella Pajrin, and with an original score by Matthew Herbert, April is a tour de force.

Nina works in the only small hospital of a provincial town as an OB-GYN. Single and abstaining from personal relationships, she is unconditionally devoted to her Hippocratic oath. When a newborn dies within seconds of being delivered under her supervision, she is accused of wrongdoing. Under investigation, every detail of Nina's personal and professional life is being scrutinized. Despite the risks, Nina remains devoted to her duty as a doctor, committed to doing what nobody else will.

Reviews

"It is a disorienting, all-consuming sensorial experience and made all the much better to those willing to surrender to its mysteries." — Little White Lies
