At the time of its making, DEVDAS was the most expensive film in Bollywood history, a fact that is visually and aurally apparent. The costumes and sets are breathtaking; the choreography and music stunning, and the story itself, as the third Hindi film adaptation of a much-beloved 1917 novella, timeless.
A love born in childhood is thwarted by caste differences and a loveless arranged marriage. As a result, a man loved fiercely by two women but unable to be with either descends into self-destruction.
India’s official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2003 Oscars, DEVDAS swept India’s Filmfare Awards, garnering Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematographer, and Best Choreography. It also earned five of India’s National Film awards, five Star Screen awards, six International Indian Film Academy awards, the 2003 Asian Film Award from MTV Asia, and a BAFTA nomination for Best Foreign Film.
