Director Elia Kazan, screenwriter Paul Osborn, and leading man James Dean—in arguably his finest performance—all earned Oscar nominations for this adaptation of the John Steinbeck classic, but it was supporting actress Jo Van Fleet, in her first movie role, who took home the trophy.
