First Match tells the story of a teenage girl from Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood who decides to join the boys wrestling team in order to reconnect with her estranged father, recently released from prison. Developed at the Sundance Directors and Screenwriters lab, First Match was written and directed by Olivia Newman and stars newcomer Elvire Emanuelle, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Get Down, The Greatest Showman), Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead) and Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight).
