Throughout his career, Herzog has been at his best exploring men haunted by their own ambitions and obsessions, as is the case with FITZCARRALDO—the story of a man (Kinski) who wants to drag a giant steamship over a hill from one river to another to build an opera house in the middle of the Amazon.
