Film Information
Paul Weitz conceived the idea for the story of Grandma long before he began writing the script. He never completed the story until he had met and worked with Lily Tomlin on the 2013 film Admission and was only then able to finish the script with her in mind. Marking Tomlin's first leading role in over 25 year and earning herself a Golden Globe nomination, she excels in a perfect balance of humor and humanity.
Elle Reid (Tomlin) has just gotten through breaking up with her girlfriend when her granddaughter, Sage (Julia Garner), unexpectedly shows up needing $600 before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash, as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets.
Reviews "Acerbic, unexpected and quietly heart-warming without ever approaching sappy, this takes a no-nonsense approach to big issues - life, love and aging - and never feels heavy-handed." – Empire
