The adaptation of co-writer Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed 2020 novel abandons the rural American vistas of Zhao's previous Best Picture-winner Nomadland and 2017’s The Rider for English timber and cobblestone to tell the heartbreaking story of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his family, as seen through the eyes of his thoughtful wife Agnes (a luminous Jessie Buckley).
In 16th-century England, an impoverished Latin tutor named William Shakespeare (Mescal) meets free-spirited Agnes (Buckley), sparking an affair that leads to marriage and three children. As Will seeks his fortune in the London theater, Agnes anchors the domestic sphere alone. The couple’s bond is tested when their youngest, Hamnet, becomes gravely ill. Awash with guilt over his absence, Shakespeare is inspired to make amends the only way he knows how: to write.
