Left-Handed Girl

Women Directed

Dir. Shih-Ching Tsou Taiwan, France 108 min R

2025 Netflix

In Mandarin and Taiwanese with English subtitles

Over 20 years after co-directing Take Out (2004) with also-then-first-time-director Sean Baker, Shih-Ching Tsou returns to the directors chair for her first solo directorial feature with Baker as producer, co-writer, and editor. Shot entirely on iPhones, Taiwan's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards is a raw and empathic story about family secrets, resilience and the struggles of being an Asian woman in a society that still prizes sons over daughters.

A single mother and her two daughters return to Taipei after several years of living in the countryside to open a stand at a buzzing night market. Each in their way will have to adapt to this new environment to make ends meet and maintain the family unity. But when their traditional grandfather forbids his youngest left-handed granddaughter from using her "devil hand," generations of family secrets begin to unravel.

Reviews
"That Left-Handed Girl still works as well as it does in spite of its schematism is a testament to Tsou’s skill at working with her actors, all of whom are excellent – especially Ye." –BFI
