In the late 70s and early 80s, Los Sures was one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. In fact, it had been called the worst ghetto in America. Diego Echeverria’s film skillfully represents the challenges of its time: drugs, gang violence, crime, abandoned real estate, racial tension, single-parent homes, and inadequate local resources. The complex portrait also celebrates the vitality of this largely Puerto Rican and Dominican community, showing the strength of their culture, their creativity, and their determination to overcome a desperate situation. Rediscovered and beautifully restored just in time for its 30th anniversary, this film is even more fascinating as recent gentrification has made Los Sures – aka Williamsburg, Brooklyn – one of the most expensive neighborhoods in New York. Desde finales de los setenta hasta comienzos de los ochenta, Los Sures fue uno de los vecindarios más pobres de la ciudad de Nueva York. De hecho, se le había calificado como el peor gueto de los EE.UU. La película de Diego Echeverría representa hábilmente los desafíos de la época: las drogas, la violencia de las pandillas, el crimen, las propiedades abandonadas, las tensiones raciales, las familias con padres solteros y la falta de recursos a nivel local. Este retrato complejo también celebra la vitalidad de la comunidad, mayoritariamente puertorriqueña y dominicana, demostrando la fuerza de su cultura, de su creatividad y de su determinación para superar una situación desesperada. Redescubierta y hermosamente restaurada justo a tiempo para su trigésimo aniversario, esta película es aún más fascinante dado que el aburguesamiento reciente ha convertido a Los Sures – ahora conocido como Williamsburg, Brooklyn – en uno de los vecindarios más caros en Nueva York.
