Join us for Art House Theater Day as we screen Network to celebrate it's 50th anniversary! AHTD is an annual program of Art House Convergence that brings audiences together to celebrate all that art house theaters - and independent film - contribute to our cultural landscape: ambitious and innovative art that provokes, challenges, entertains, and inspires.
Film Information
Winner of four Academy Awards® (including Best Actor for Peter Finch and Best Actress for Faye Dunaway), Lumet's masterwork remains as powerful and urgent fifty years after its release. A terrifying and timely satire packed with exhilarating performances, the time has never been better to tune back into Network.
Howard Beale, a veteran newscaster, is informed by his ratings-driven network executives that he is about to be dumped because he "skews old" - in turn, he uses his next broadcast to announce that he is going to commit suicide on his final program. An ambitious programming executive convinces her superiors to let the broadcast go ahead, hoping that the final event will give the network its greatest ratings ever.
Reviews
"It is [Lumet's] unobtrusive skill that allows all those different notes and energy levels to exist within the same film. In other hands, the film might have whirled to pieces. In his, it became a touchstone." – Roger Ebert
