About Alexander Payne
One of contemporary cinema’s most talented and visionary filmmakers, Alexander Payne is the director of ten feature-length films, including local favorite Nebraska, Sideways, for which he and his writing partner Jim Taylor won the Academy Award® for Best Adapted Screenplay, and The Descendants, for which he and his co-writers also received an Academy Award® for Best Adapted Screenplay. He is a three-time Oscar® nominee for Best Director as well as a two-time nominee for the Cannes Film Festival prestigious Palm D’Or. An early and ardent supporter of Film Streams, Mr. Payne has been instrumental in the programming and success of every Feature event to date, beginning in July 2008 when he invited and interviewed actress Laura Dern. In the years since, Feature guests have included Debra Winger, Steven Soderbergh, Jane Fonda, director David O. Russell, Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, and more.
Synopsis of the film:
A curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them -- a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) -- and with the school's head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da'Vine Joy Randolph).
