Kicking off our Dundee Midnights Paul Verhoeven sci-fi tryptich is the filmmaker’s second English language feature. Equal parts exploitation flick, LADY IN THE LAKE, and buddy cop movie, ROBOCOP shows Verhoeven sharpening his skewers as he tackles American consumerist culture. Formally, the film takes the use of the “eye-camera” to the next level, blending audience subject positions in ways that explore memory and objectivity. What could have been another slice of 1980s US ultra violent cinema has turned into a prescient sci-fi actioner that doesn’t account for taste. -- Andy Helmkamp
