Sentimental Value

Dir. Joachim Trier Norway, France, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom 133 min R

2025 NEON

In Norwegian and English with English subtitles

In Joachim Trier’s follow-up to his beloved The Worst Person in the World, he teams up once again with the fabulous Renate Reinsve. Trier’s insightful and captivating adult drama, which won the Grand Prix at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, furthers the writer-director’s piercing exploration of the frayed ties that bind us to one another and to our creative selves.

Sisters Nora (Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) reunite with their estranged father (Stellan Skarsgård), the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star (Elle Fanning). Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father — and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.

Reviews
"There has rarely been a film in which the family dynamic is more genuinely defined than in this one." – Roger Ebert
