Snowpiercer

Dir. Bong Joon Ho South Korea, USA, France, Czech Republic 127 min

2013

In English and Korean with English subtitles

Although wildly successful in South Korea, the rest of the world had to wait on seeing Snowpiercer due to Harvey Weinstein's demands that Bong cut 20 minutes of footage to make it more appealing to Western audiences. After uproar from the public as well as some cast members, a directors cut was eventually released with the caveat that it switched distributors and only showed in a handful of arthouses. Only after the success of those screenings was the film given a wider US release.

A post-apocalyptic ice age forces humanity aboard a globe-spanning super train that functions via a perpetual-motion engine and through a cruel class system. One of the train’s poorest residents risks everything to incite a revolt for control of the engine, and the future of the world.

Reviews

"It's what Bong does with that parable that makes the relentless, politically provocative and visually spectacular Snowpiercer the best action film of 2014, and probably the best film, period." – Salon

"As ever, Bong deftly melds tones without them clashing, and as with “The Host,” brilliantly adds politics and social realism onto a genre picture." – IndieWire
