With director Matt Sobel!
Matt Sobel’s assured directorial debut, filmed on his family’s farm in Loup City, Neb., is the story of Ryder, a gay teen from California headed to Nebraska for a family reunion. Though he is intent on coming out to his extended family, he holds off in deference to his mother’s concerns about their country relatives’ reactions. Nevertheless, Ryder is ostracized after an incident with a younger cousin leads to accusations of inappropriate behavior, confrontations, and conversations that suggest dark secrets in his family’s past. A twisty trip down the rabbit hole of familial dysfunction, TAKE ME TO THE RIVER is an intense feat of independent filmmaking.
Bonus: Paul Thomas Anderson’s new 35mm music video for Radiohead’s “Daydreaming” will screen before this showing.
