The Outsiders

Dir. Francis Ford Coppola Unites States 91 min PG

1983 Warner Bros

Based on the 1967 best-selling young-adult novel by S. E. Hinton, The Outsiders is considered the first ‘Brat Pack’ movie, as it stars then-unknown young actors in many of their first break-through roles, including C. Thomas Howell (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial), Rob Lowe (‘The West Wing’, ‘Parks and Recreation’), Emilio Estevez (St. Elmo's Fire, The Breakfast Club), Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing), and Diane Lane (Under the Tuscan Sun), who went on to superstar-calibre careers.

A teen gang in rural Oklahoma, the Greasers are perpetually at odds with the Socials, a rival group. When Greasers Ponyboy and Johnny get into a brawl that ends in the death of a Social member, the boys are forced to go into hiding. Soon Ponyboy and Johnny, along with the intense Dallas and their other Greaser buddies, must contend with the consequences of their violent lives.

Reviews
"This is a film that carries you along and there is an added savour in seeing those cherubic faces which have since settled into middle age." – The Guardian
