Film Information

Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short Bao) took her experiences of growing up a Chinese Canadian with immigrant parents and turned it into a fun, stylized film that explores often untouched territory for animated films. With the film, she hoped that “kids who watch it, parents too, feel empowered to take up space, to be big and loud, to let their inner red pandas out and to be proud of all the things that make them different.”

Mei Lee, a confident, dorky 13-year-old is torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming, is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships, and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda!

Reviews
"A fizzing, squealing adolescent explosion of a movie that nails a fundamental truth about growing up." – The Guardian
