Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Dir. Mel Stuart USA 100 min G

1971 Warner Bros.

Part book adaptation, part Quaker Oats candy bar promotion, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory didn’t get the love it deserved until it landed on TV and home video, becoming a regular part of Christmas time programming alongside films like The Wizard of Oz and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Coming from the beloved Roald Dahl story, the film follows Charlie Bucket as he and four other lucky kids tour the surreal Wonka Chocolate Factory. Today, the film remains a hit with cult audiences for its childhood nostalgia, a knockout performance by Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, and that Tunnel of Terror scene that used to keep us up at night. ― Aaron Lee
