Great Directors: Ingmar Bergman
We’re excited to announce the latest installment of our “Great Directors” program: a 10-film series dedicated to legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman (February 1 – April 4, 2013).
Following Bergman’s death in 2007 at age 94— on the very same day as Michelangelo Antonioni — Woody Allen, perhaps Bergman’s biggest fan, spoke to TIME about the great director’s legacy:
“His films have eternal relevance, because they deal with the difficulty of personal relationships and lack of communication between people and religious aspirations and mortality, existential themes that will be relevant a thousand years from now. When many of the things that are successful and trendy today will have been long relegated to musty-looking antiques, his stuff will still be great.”
