Payne himself has said that one of the reasons he is able to create such moving and artistically interesting films is because of his obsessive study of film. Payne’s credentials as a connoisseur of world cinema are many. Not only has he served as a juror at the Cannes Film Festival, he also curated films as a special guest at the Telluride Film Festival and taught film appreciation as a visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
