The Seventies in Italy, now referred to as Years of Lead, were times of social turmoil and political strife marked by waves of violence led by both right- and left-wing groups. During this decade, engaged filmmakers used their medium to reflect on their political positions as well as on ethical and existential questions around revolutionary activity and personal sacrifice. The three films in the series, though thematically covering periods extending beyond the directors’ immediate present, grapple with the embodiment of the political within the individual through both historical and fictional characters.
