Our recurring series for fans of great music and great stories returns Oct 14 with Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda. As the legendary composer returns to music after a bout with cancer, Sakamoto’s brush with mortality inspires a resounding new masterpiece.
On Nov 11, it’s a fortieth anniversary screening of The Last Waltz. Widely considered the greatest of all concert films, for good reason, Martin Scorsese’s landmark documentary captures the last performance of The Band, interspersed with intimate (and addled) interviews with band members. Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young are a few of the all-star guests.
Let’s Spend the Night Together, showing Dec 9, will close the quarter. A cinematographer’s dream, this Rolling Stones project may be one of the best looking concert docs. It was directed by the wizardly Hal Ashby, and this screening coincides with a Great Directors series in his honor.
