Cléo from 5 to 7

Women Directed

Dir. Agnès Varda France 90 min Not Rated

1962 Janus Films

A chronicle of the minutes of one woman’s life, Agnès Varda's Cléo from 5 to 7 is a spirited mix of vivid vérité and melodrama, featuring a score by Michel Legrand (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and cameos by Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina.

While she anxiously waits for the results of a medical test, French singer Cléo Victoire spends a couple of hours wandering through the streets of Paris. Along the way, she meets up with her lover, goes shopping, visits her model friend Dorothee, and has a brief affair with a passing soldier.

Reviews

"Cléo from 5 to 7 is one of the breezier New Wave classics, cosmopolitan to the core, tuned to the buzz and thrum of the city – which is Paris circa the early 60s. C’est magnifique!" – The Guardian
