Named by the National Board of Review as the Best Film of 2020 and receiver of numerous other accolades, it's a shame that Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods never saw a theatrical release. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the theatrical run was cancelled and the film was released only on streaming. There was no way that Lee could have foreseen that his film, which tackles racism and political violence, would release just as protests surged across the nation surrounding the death of George Floyd. The film could hardly be timelier.
Four African-American Vets — Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) — return to Vietnam. Searching for the remains of their fallen Squad Leader (Chadwick Boseman) and the promise of buried treasure, our heroes, joined by Paul's concerned son (Jonathan Majors), battle forces of Man and Nature — while confronted by the lasting ravages of the immorality of the Vietnam War.
Reviews
"Da 5 Bloods is a paintball gun loaded with real bullets: a blast of satire and emotional agony about race and the American empire, the evergreen wound of Vietnam, African-American sacrifices on the field of battle, and the fact that black deaths matter." –The Guardian
