Alex Proyas's multi hyphenate follow up to THE CROW is a brilliant genre mash up. Rufus Sewell's Murdoch is a character out of time and memory, wondering a sunless city best described as METROPOLIS after The Fall. Assisted to unknown ends by Kiefer Sutherland's Dr. Schreber (borrowing more than a little from Peter Lorre in M) Murdoch avoids pursuit from a noir gumshoe played by William Hurt and a fish-belly white squad of knifed assassins (including ROCKY HORROR's own Ian Richardson). Though full of astounding visuals and thrilling suspense, the film ultimately reveals its interests lay more in a blend of existential terror and simulacra. -- Andy Helmkamp
