Desk Set was the eighth screen pairing of Hepburn and Tracy but was a first for them in many regards: the first film the pair made together outside MGM, their first color movie and their first CinemaScope production. Like many of their films, they're paired in a battle of the sexes but the film also eerily forecasted the increased digitization and consolidation of certain careers that rings ever true today.
Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn) is a library reference clerk stuck in a dead-end relationship with a boring television executive (Gig Young). Her life is thrown into turmoil when computer expert Richard Summers (Spencer Tracy) enters it. He has been assigned with automating her department, and she is fearful that Summers' new computers will automate her out of a job.
Reviews
"As with all their films together, the two enjoyed nothing as much as playing off of each other, secure in the fact that they had found the perfect onscreen and offscreen equal...For Hepburn and Tracy, the real chemistry was in the conversation, which went on unabated for the rest of their lives." –AV Club
