In the 1920s, a domineering stage mom (Rosalind Russell) maneuvers to launch her two daughters to stardom. The more talented June tires of performing and elopes, leaving just Louise to fuel her mother's dreams. When they land at a third-rate burlesque house in Kansas, it seems like the end of the road. But Louise flourishes, transforming herself into Gypsy Rose Lee and becoming the highest paid burlesque dancer on the circuit. Soon, it will be Louise's turn to seek independence.
