Originally, the script for Holes was infinitely darker, if you can imagine what an adaptation from Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) looks like. But of course, Disney wanted to take the route of a faithful, PG adaptation of the novel, so they brought in its author Louis Sachar to take over the job.
Dogged by bad luck stemming from an ancient family curse, young Stanley Yelnats is sent to Camp Green Lake, a very weird place that's not green and doesn't have a lake.
