From Film Streams Member and Volunteer Jacquie Montag: “I first saw HORSE FEATHERS around 1971, at a screening during the run of Joslyn’s wonderful Sunday afternoon classic film series. This series regularly filled Witherspoon Hall and, in the days before cable, developed a generation of classic film fans. HORSE FEATHERS was especially funny then because the Huskers were in their days of Bob Devaney and back-to-back national championships. The college football jokes in the film (‘the trouble around here is we’re neglecting football for education’) seemed almost naughty to laugh at in light of the Husker successes.
“This is the film where I discovered the Marx Brothers. The four (even Zeppo has a good showcase here) are shown off to their best advantage. The script (writers included SJ Perelman) seamlessly blends vaudeville schtick, topical humor, music, and a touch of romance (trashed by the brothers, of course). HORSE FEATHERS turns 79 this year. If you are not familiar with the term ‘college widow’ or know what speakeasies were, you may want to read up on those terms before you see the picture. You’ll laugh twice as hard.”
Film Club Screening: Monday, February 7, 4pm. Open to all, FREE for students with school ID. A post-show discussion will follow the film, led by Film Streams Director Rachel Jacobson and Education Committee Member Julie Rowse.
