Film Information

From Oscar-nominated director RaMell Ross, comes a daring and intense film adaptation of Colson Whitehead's "The Nickel Boys," buoyed by expressive cinematography by Jomo Fray (All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt), pinpoint-precise editing by Nicholas Monsour (NOPE), and deeply felt supporting performances from Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Hamish Linklater, and Daveed Diggs.

Elwood Curtis's college dreams shatters along a two-lane Florida highway. Bearing the brunt of an innocent misstep, he's sentenced to a brutal reformatory sunk deep in the Jim Crow South. He encounters another ward, the seen-it-all Turner. The two Black teens strike up an alliance: Turner dispensing fundamental tips for survival, Elwood, clinging to his optimistic worldview.

Reviews

"The writerly work by Ross and screenwriter Joslyn Barnes, along with Fray, is nothing short of incredible. They take what feels like a nearly unfilmable book and reformulate the relaxed poeticism of Whitehead into a film whose cinematic prowess overwhelms the viewer with images that would merely be gorgeous if they weren’t so haunting." – Roger Ebert
