In this fantastically paced, beautifully composed Cannes winner, we meet a poor family who seem nearly joyful about the lengths they must go to in order to make ends meet, including -- yes -- shoplifting. When they take in an abused young girl they find out in the cold, it seems like just another addition to this rangy, unorthodox crew. But even as this group of misfits revel in their unusual family unit, whispers and furtive conversations hint at a darker side to their arrangement.
