Did You Know
The Heartbreak Kid is a paradox: it's a classic comedy directed by living legend Elaine May and starring Charles Grodin and Jeannie Berlin — but it's tough to find. According to the British Film Institute, "The film’s rights now belong to pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb, who briefly dabbled in film production but finally dissolved their entertainment division. In 2021, it reiterated that it had no plans to sell the rights. As a result, The Heartbreak Kid is unavailable on any streaming platforms. Vintage DVDs are available on import for a premium, and bootlegged versions of the film can be found, but officially its home release is out of print."
Post-Screening Discussion: July 27
After the July 27th screening, we will host a conversation with Tom Knoblauch and Courtney Bierman. Their Omaha Public Radio show, The Entertainment, aired a four-part series on the life, work, and legacy of Elaine May as an essential American auteur. All four episodes are available now on your favorite podcast app.
Tom Knoblauch is a cultural critic, internationally award-winning filmmaker, broadcaster, and voiceover artist. Together with Ben Matukewicz, he started Omaha-based Aksarben Creative in order to contribute to the Midwest's film culture. He is the creator and host of The Entertainment, a weekly public radio program exploring how culture manifests through our screens. He is also the author of the forthcoming Building a Feminocentric Canon: Céline Sciamma and the Dawn of Post-Auteurism, which will be released next year from Lexington Books.
Courtney Bierman is a producer and local host at Omaha Public Radio, where she works on shows such as The Entertainment, Riverside Chats, Lives, and Faturday Omaha. She's also a Film Streams employee! When she's not editing audio or behind the concessions counter, you can find her watching movies on her couch — probably with a cat nearby.
