The golden age of romantic comedy, as some have called the 1990s, certainly began with the release of When Harry Met Sally… in 1989. With this film and its success, the genre experienced a certain resurgence, seeing more films being produced, adhering to the genre’s early conventions as attractive protagonists traversed various plot contrivances on their journey to reach their happy ending. Reiner's film inspired countless others and created a new standard for rom coms that is still being matched today.

Reviews "Ephron’s dialogue represents the way people would like to be able to talk. It’s witty and epigrammatic, and there are lots of lines to quote when you’re telling friends about the movie. The dialogue would defeat many actors, but Crystal and Ryan help it to work; their characters seem smart and quick enough to almost be this witty." – Roger Ebert
