In this Deep Dive into the life of Hattie McDaniel, we will discuss the events that shaped her career while exploring Hollywood’s relationship to race in the silent and golden eras. McDaniel was a performer within three crucial decades in which the status of the black performer waxed and waned alongside the status of black citizens in America. Her Oscar-winning work in Gone with the Wind nevertheless became emblematic of difficulties she experienced on film sets and came at a time when she was attempting to make amends to her community for the stereotypical roles she played.
