Film Streams is pleased to again join dozens of its national arthouse colleagues in Science on Screen, an innovative series that creatively pairs classic, cult, and documentary films with lively talks led by notable figures from the world of science, technology, and medicine.
On Tuesday, March 28, at 7 p.m., Film Streams will present the 1985 “ramen western” TAMPOPO followed by a panel discussion on . Pre-show snacks will be provided by Ugly Duck Japanese Americana Street Food. Following the film will be a panel discussion with Dr. Pamela Runestad, Resident Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Creighton University, who regularly teaches TAMPOPO to illustrate Japanese food culture, gender, and class issues; Dr. James Blair, Director of the Center for Neurobehavioral Research at Boys Town National Research Hospital, whose work focuses on the neuroscience of emotion and aggression; and AJ Swanda, Lead Chef at Ugly Duck and graduate of Metropolitan Community College’s Culinary Arts Program. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Soonjo Hwang, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and self-described TAMPOPO fantatic.
On Tuesday, May 9, at 7 pm, Akira Kurosawa’s DREAMS will springboard into a discussion on the states of consciousness with Dr. Sanjay Singh, Chair of the Department of Neurology at Creighton University School of Medicine. Unfolding over eight vignettes, this late masterpiece, from 1990, collects vivid nightime visions that visited the auteur.
On Tuesday, May 30, at 7 pm, Film Streams will team with The Nature Conservancy Nebraska and Aqua-Africa for a screening of THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. In director Nicolas Roeg’s oddity, David Bowie stars as a humanoid alien who comes to Earth to get water for his dying planet. Post-film discussion on water issues and conservation will feature Mace Hack, State Director of The Nature Conservancy; Buey Ray Tut, Founder of Aqua-Africa; and Jess Benjamin, a local ceramic artist whose work focuses on water and drought issues. The panel will be moderated by Mike McMeekin, President of Lamp Rynearson & Associates, engineer, and community activist.
On Wednesday, July 12, Film Streams and Verdis Group will present the acclaimed 2012 film FUTURE WEATHER. This comedic drama about finding the courage to survive change features powerful performances by Amy Madigan (FIELD OF DREAMS, GONE BABY GONE), Lili Taylor (SAY ANYTHING, SIX FEET UNDER), and breakout star Perla Haney-Jardine. Lauduree (Haney-Jardine) is a 13-year-old loner, passionate about nature and obsessed with ecological disaster. Greta (Madigan), her grandmother, is a fiery nurse jaded by alcohol and disappointment. When Lauduree is abruptly abandoned by her dreamer single mom, she decides to take survival into her own hands, forcing her and Greta to rethink their futures. Following the film will be panel discussion on climate change and its impact on our lives with Martha Shulski, state climatologist, and Kim Morrow, senior associate at Verdis Group. Melissa Hoeman, communications analyst at Nebraska Medicine and former KETV meterologist, will moderate.
