What makes a winner?
Only three films in the history of The Academy Awards have claimed all of the “Big Five” Oscars. Winning Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, & Best Screenplay (adapted or original) is a rare mandate. Can an in-depth examination of these three winning films illuminate just what makes a winning film?
Students will watch IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934) dir. Frank Capra, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST (1975) dir. Milos Forman, & THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) dir. Jonathan Demme before class, and then engage in an in-depth consideration of film style, critical thinking, and film as art.
