Although it occurs every other year, our biennial Cinemateca series, presented with our terrific partners at the Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, is truly a year-round endeavor. That’s because with so many incredible possibilities, the process of selecting a handful of films is difficult—though also great fun. We’re thrilled to say that this year’s series begins with film we’ve wanted to screen since year one: Luis Bunuel’s groundbreaking portrait of street life, LOS OLVIDADOS (1950). From there we present two Omaha premieres, the Dominican documentary PELOTERO and the Mexican-American narrative MOSQUITO Y MARI, and two recent releases: the immigration drama A BETTER LIFE (2011) and the incisive, Bolivian-set film-within-a-film EVEN THE RAIN (2010). And in a new twist this year, our Cinemateca series overlaps twice with our Forever Young Family & Children’s Series with the Cuban animated romp VAMPIRES IN HAVANA (1985) and the innovative Colombian documentary LITTLE VOICES (2010).
